2009 Thacher Scholar Awards
The 2009 Thacher Scholars Awards will be given to secondary school students (grades 9-12) demonstrating the best use of geospatial technologies or data to study Earth. Eligible geospatial tools and data include satellite remote sensing, aerial photography, geographic information systems (GIS), and Global Positioning System (GPS). The main focus of the project must be on the application of the geospatial tool(s) or data to study a problem related to Earth’s environment.
The AGS Scholarships Program The McColl Family Fellowship, given by Dr. and Mrs. Robert W. McColl, consists of round-trip airfare to any place in the world of the candidate’s choosing. The candidate must secure funding for other expenses from other sources.
This is a short-term fellowship program available to individuals who wish to communicate their geographical research results to a broad, educated general audience. Awards of $3000 for four-week fellowships will be provided to support residencies for the purpose of conducting research that makes direct use of the Library, and results in publication in a mutually agreed outlet.
Darrel Hess Community College Geography Scholarship The Association of American Geographers is pleased to announce a national scholarship program for community college students. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students from community colleges, junior colleges, city colleges, or similar two-year educational institutions who will be transferring as geography majors to four year colleges and universities. These scholarships are funded by Darrel Hess, coauthor of the textbook Physical Geography: A Landscape Appreciation by McKnight and Hess, published by Prentice Hall.
AAG Dissertation Research Grants The AAG provides support for doctoral dissertation research in the form of small grants of approximately $500 to PhD candidates of any geographic specialty.

Earthwatch Institute Earthwatch is a respected leader in the field of experiential education, with programs ranging from improving the quality of geography instruction to “live from the field,” web-based virtual expeditions reaching classrooms worldwide. To date, more than 3,500 students and 4,000 classroom teachers have received training and inspiration on Earthwatch expeditions.

Central Coast Joint Data Committee These grants are made available to promote scholarly research in cartography research by students enrolled in a geography or related degree program. Grants are available up to a maximum of $500 and may be used for items necessary and relevant to research such as travel, materials, equipment, and human subject fees. Deadline for application are March 15th, June 15th, and November 1st.
